He was just ahead of his time. A great painter, his usage of color and hopefully a good idea.

I can't paint a lick but I am a total art addict, collector and art historian. Personally, I find Basquiat to be the most important abstract painter ever. Not only could he put the creation down on the canvas, but he had an eery ability to bring the painting to "life" as though the artwork was literally going to talk to you. Look at his canvases again and decide...

Basquiat and urban global violence
I am a sculptor.
I have worked my early years in Mexico city, then to launch my public sculptures for the world.

I feed back my work by reviewing Basquiat's art.Enjoying Basquiat is to atend to an unpredictable meeting with the pulse of contemporary world. If after 18 years being death his work breaths far newer than other's productions now adays, i want to hear a better definition of visionary.

We work as contemporary artists either in our studios or walk and suffer the streets, but undoubdtly we return to the comfort of our homes, the warmth and love of our children and wives. Basquiat ventured to meet mankind and did it without a parachute. He crashed and died to expose our fears and sorrows, which are now more present than ever. For this, i render him everyday's tribute by thinking and feedingback my work with his free and outstanding compositions. One watches his work and irredimably nourishes one's work as the first time we met Picasso.

Best regards.

I'm working on an art research project for my school, i live in CT, south africa, and managed to read the piece by R.Hughes and J.Seeds response. personally, the process behind basquiats work has touched more than any of the other artists i have studyed in 5 years. if anybody has anything, interviews or personal experience with Basquiat please email me your impressions that HE made and how you feel you relate to his works. I only wish to collaborate with the views of these art critics with those with other experiences on Basquait and his art

I have some 1977-78 era 8 by 10 photos of samo graffiti on walls and I wonder if these are of historical interest to anyone? I also have an early color xerox postcard by JMB. Any ideas on what to do with them?

I, sadly enough, live in Florida. It's pretty conservative. At least where I am. I can't find Downtown 81 and I've been searching forever. If anyone could help me that'd be awesome. thanks, central florida girl dying to see downtown 81.

I also live in Washington D.C. and would like to see the new release of DOWNTOWN 81. So if anyone has any information about it, such as video releases, please contact me. Does anyone know how to get a copy of Rene Ricard's article "The Radiant Child" published in Artforum in the 1981 issue?

books.
Anyone interested in Jean-Michel Basquiat should read "Widow Basquiat" by Jennifer Clement. It's mostly about his relationship with his muse, Suzanne, and it's one of the most beautiful, expressive books I've ever read. I don't know how accurate it si but it certainly gives you a deeper understanding of the artist than the biopic.

Basquiat movies
If you want to see a REALLY good film to do with Jean-Michel Basquiat, check out DOWNTOWN 81, which gives you a closer portrait of the man than that contrived biopic out a couple of years back, but in a slightly different way. Highly recommended.
