I W Taber
I don't know who is who. Am trying to get info on illustrator of Kipling book. Signature I believe is I W Taber. Looking for picture of signature - whose ever it is!

I.W. Taber's, continued
I find it interesting [[]according to the bios in Ask Art] that: both I.W. Tabers were born in New Bedford, Massachusetts; Isaiah "returned to New Bedford" in 1854, and Isaac Walton was born in New Bedford in 1857. Isaiah was about 27 years Isaac's senior-- Isaiah wasn't, perchance, Isaac's father??? I assume this is NOT the case for if the Taber's were related this would certainly be noted in the biographies, but the time periods and all do seem rather a coincidence to me! :-)

I.W. Taber confusion
I should add that I would be very suspicious of all biographical information you may find published. Confusion of these two I.W. Tabers has persisted for decades, starting with Groce & Wallace (for the N-Y Historical Society), and persisting through most biographical dictionaries on Western artists. I would wager that all drawings and sketches attributed to Isaiah West Taber (the photographer) are actually by Isaac Walton Taber. This is true for the works cited in the Edan Hughes biography quoted here on Ask-Art -- I believe both sketches attributed to Isaiah that are in The Bancroft Library are actually by Isaac, and I know they were done for the Century Magazine, to which Isaac was a frequent contributor. Until I see evidence to the contrary, I will assume "photograph = saiah West Taber / drawing = Isaac Walton Taber".

Two Tabers
... last posting interrupted, and perhaps posted prematurely. See Walt Reed's "The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000" for examples of drawing and signatures of Isaac W. Taber. I believe all works now illustrated in Ask-Art are by Isaac, and not photographer Isaiah West Taber -- including the gouache linked to Isaiah.

Two I.W. Tabers
I think the pen & ink photographic-like drawings credited in Ask-Art's listing to Isaac Walton Taber actually were done by Isaiah; and the whaling gouache credited to BOTH Tabers was done by Isaac. Does anyone know?? Does anyone care???
