Penney and the Smokies
Can anyone tell me how much time the artist spent in the Smoky Mountains and when, and how many paintings he may have done of Smoky Mountain scenes?

We have several of Fred's paintings and recently came across a pad of his water colors in a box of my wifes aunts stuff ... to bad some are water damaged. I only met him once but now wish I had spent more time talking to him.

Fred D. Penney
For many years a beautiful painting by Fred D. Penney of a swan ballerina hung above the bed of my aunt in Chicago. She left it to me and I gave it to my daughter because she had admired it since she was a child. It is in soft shades of pinks and greys. I know this is very different from the landscapes he is commonly known for. Does anyone know of this piece, what it is titled and when it might have been painted? I believe my aunt purchased it as a gift at an auction in the forties or early fifties and liked it so much that she kept it!

Teacher
I attended Libertyville high school 1946-1948 where Mr. Penney was my art teacher. One day our whole class walked to his home to see his studio. I have his signature in 2 of my yearbooks.

Mr and Mrs Penney were friends of my parents in Rancho Mirage, California. I still have three of his paintings, two older works, and one of the desert, La Quinta Canyon Blues. Fred and Paula were truly lovely people.

I grew up in Libertyville, IL. Fred Penney was a household name for us, and my family owns many of his works. There is an oil hanging in the room with me right now. His work was often on exhibit at the David Adler Museum in town. (David Adler was a noted local architect, whose house became a museum later. The two artists thus became linked in the town's memory.) Fred Penney's art is like a window to the beautiful western landscapes he was famous for.

I have a painting signed Fred D. Penney. The frame has a gold label stating Illinois Fed. of Women's Club Award 1960. Trying to find out value. It is a landscape. Anyone have any info?
