Kimon Nicolaides Obit My question is the same as shawn's. The NY Times' Free Preview Archive lists first paragraphs of articles following his death: e.g., a Will for Probate(1938): "NICOLAIDES, KIMON (July 18,). Estate, less than $5,000. To Anna E. Nicolaides, widow. executrix. 870 W. 181st St.". An obituary: July 20, 1938, Wednesday Page 19, 330 words; "Kimon Nicolaides, artist and instructor at the Art Students League, 215 West Fifty-seventh Street, died Monday night in the Post-Graduate Hospital after an illness of six weeks. His age was 46." Access to the full articles requires paid subscription, or one-time purchase. There are other headlines in 1938, '39, etc. regarding shows or mention. The Probate article continues on for more than 2000 words; this obit for 330; perhaps somewhere in there is exactly how or why he died rather young.

Kimon Nicoliades How did Kimon Nicoliades die?
07/27/2004 Jan
Nicolaides, Kimon Hi , Sorry I can't help u with the portrait, but I am really excited that you are publishing an auto biography and look forward to it's release. I am interested in his ideas on contour drawing and observation in general, as I am a botanical artist. Betty Edwards book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" quotes Nicolaides often and since reading his book I realize he has influenced her work immensley. I was wondering if you could tell me if what he died from and at what age and what his nationality was? Also do you know if he had any association or connection with Egon Shielle, whom also did very concerntrated contour drawings of figures, they were about the same age, perhaps it was a style that was being explored at that time? Thanks for the chat.

Nicolaides I am working from Nicolaides' book The Natural Way to Draw, and finding it would be good to have a teacher to consult with sometimes. Do you know anyone who is teaching using this method? Or who would give me some guidance now and then?

The Natural Way to Draw As an art student around 1961 I learned everything I know about drawing from the great book compiled from Kimon Nicolaides' teaching. It was my drawing 'bible'! I found this site while trying to locate an online version of the book to recommend to a friend. At least of the basic gesture and contour excercises.
