Reiffel I was wondering if Charles Reiffel ever did paintings meant for advertising. I have a painting, the size of a poster, of Uncle Sam advertising Lager Beer and it is signed C.Reiffel, done in the late 1800's.

Reiffel relative My cousin, Belinda Picklesimer (also born in Indianapolis), and I (born in Lafayette, Indiana) have been researching our artist ancestor, Charles Reiffel. Belinda is Charles Reiffel's great-grandaughter. My great-grandmother, Emma Reiffel Schmidt, was his sister. Mr. Wason's story of receiving a Reiffel painting as a wedding gift rings true with us. Her family still has the painting given to her grandmother; my mother sold the painting given to her mother to mark her wedding. Our cousin, Jack Johnson, who is a contemporary of both Belinda's and my mother's, and related across the family as we are, is also an artist. He displays in galleries in Carmel, California and Saugatuck, Michigan. I would love to see a photo of Mr. Wason's Reiffel. Both Jack Johnson's daughter, Shelly, and I lived and/or worked close to Times Square in the mid-1980's. Shelly worked at Macy's and I worked at "Rolling Stone" magazine. Belinda now lives in North Carolina, Shelly lives in Las Vegas, and I live in Chicago, though because of my job, I spend a great deal of time, like Mr. Wason, in New York City.

Charles Reiffel/Rober Wason My grandfather, a writer named Robert Wason, lived in the artists' community in Silvermine, CT while Reiffel lived there. I presume they were friends. We have a large painting (oil) of Times Square on a rainy night by Reiffel. It is signed by the artist to my grandfather and his wife. I think it was a wedding gift.
The painting has always been known in the family as "Times Square". It depicts a cold late Fall rainy night in Times Square. The painting is quite unlike his other works. It's a city scene. It's more impressionistic than his landscapes, more in the Ashcan style of NYC. Perhaps it is an experiment.
The painting hung over my grandparents' fireplace where I came to like it very much when I was a child. The thing has really grown on me; looking into the mist, buildings and people emerge. As I travel to Manhattan at times, I know this aspect of the city.

Sarah Truax/Charles Reiffle My grandmother's Aunt Sadie was the artist Sarah Truax. She was friends with Charles Reiffle. We have a miniature painting that Charles painted for Sadie. He sent it in a frame (sort of as a personal christmas card. On the back it says: "To Sarah, With love and many happy returns of the day. From Frankie & Charles 1932. Winnipauk Hills in Winter, Winnipauk, Connecticut." Frankie was Charles wife. Just wondering if this was commen for him to send these out to his other artist friends.
