I have a set of Gaul's Civil War prints and want to find out more about them. They have been in my family more than 50 years. Is there a book or website that could tell me more about them? "Leaving Home" is one of them.

There are details about the work, "Leaving Home" chronicled in the Van Buren County Historical Journal, Volume 2, published in 1982 of which I have a copy. My mother gave me additional information that has been passed down through her mother: Hitchcock(my mother), Grissom (grandmother), Galloway (great grandmother), Campen g-great grandmother). My g-g grandparents, Gavin and Elizabeth Campen, owned and ran a boarding house in Spencer, TN. One of their occasional boarders was Gilbert Gaul. The story I got was that he inherited about 5,000 acres in the area of what is now Fall Creek Falls State Park but was required to live there 5 years according to the will. (He later built a cabin on the land.) His mother's parents, the Gilberts, had a house in Spencer. Anyway, he had a studio in the upstairs bedroom on the left, front of the boarding house. (I have a nice, clear picture of this house.) My grandmother occasionally helped her mother with housekeeping duties there. Her mother told her not to disturb Mr. Gaul's room to clean or to go in there at all. Grandma & Grandpa Campen were the models for the "Leaving Home" piece. Their living room (parlor, as it was called in those days) is also perserved in the artwork in great detail, right down to the rug on the floor. "Tidings from the Front" was also done there, using the backporch of the house and the same greats as models. According to the afore mentioned historical journal article, the son in the "Leaving Home" picture 'was a relative of Gaul's. Mrs. James LeSuer said she posed for the two red-haired girls, and the black servant was a native of Nashville.'

I just heard of Gilbert (William) Gaul on the Antiques Road Show where they appraised a painting. I am very curious about Gilbert's Family...you see my grandfather had a family members in Jersey and he told no one whom his father or brother was. My Fathers name was William S. Gaul, and my brother is also William Gaul? I am also an artist/illistrator and engineer, and my brother is an Architect. If anyone knows more about the Gilberts family origin please write. Gilbert Gaul in Van Buren County, Tennessee
Gilbert Gaul inherited land in Van Buren County, Tennessee. In the rugged Cumberland Mountains in an area known as Fall Creek Falls. This is now a state park with the highest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains as it's main attraction. It is still rugged, but has a hotel, camp sites, and one of the finest golf courses in the nation. Gilbert Gaul lived and pained in Van Buren County. Is is belived that some of his finest Civil War paintings were completed while he resided there. In the painting "The Pickett" it is said that Buck Walling a resident of the Fall Creek Falls area posed for Gaul in the scene. Also the house scence from "Leaving Home" is said to have been painted for a house in Spencer, Tennessee. In addition to being a great artist, Gilbert Gaul had to be a rugged individual to live in the hills of Van Buren County, Tennessee.

Gilbert Gaul was also a book illustrator. He did all the illustrations(19) for A STRANGE MANUSCRIPT FOUND IN A COPPER CYLINDER, published by Harper and Brothers, Franklin Square, NY in 1888. He did three of the illustrations in THE DESERTER AND OTHER STORIES, by Harold Frederick,1898, Boston, Lothrop Publishing Company. He did the two illustrations in the book, THE LAW OF THE WHITE CIRCLE, by Thornwell Jacobs, Nashville, Taylor-Trotwood Publishing Company, 1908. The Southern Art Publishing Company, Nashville, organized by Jacobs and others, was principally to market paintings and illustrations by Gaul(The Georgia Historical Quarterly, Vol. LXXXIII, No.2, Summer 1999). Gilbert Gaul, at that time was the only southerner then part of the prestigious National Academy(see above reference).
