JH Sharp portrait painting Looking to find a portrait painted of my grt-grt grandmother Martha Amos. She lived in Ironton, OHio, but visited her sister in Cincinnati. I have reason to believe that Sharp painted her portrait sometime in the late 1800s as my ancestor was dead by 1884 and Sharp was headed to Europe or points west by the late 1800s. Any ideas on where these older paintings might be found greatly appreciated. patricia

Joseph Henry sharp Sharing the Sharp experience: In 1990, I acquired a 37" x39" Sharpe oil painting(undated)of the Oahu Kokocrater volcanic rock coastline, waves crashing upon nearby multi-colored rock formations, churning ocean depths with the island of Molokai'i faintly obscurred by rain on the horizon. It is a very powerful painting. I purchased it from it's first buyer and with this painting came Sharp's handwritten letter in its postmarked envelope from Taos, that accompanied the original delivery of the painting to its buyer in 1946. In this letter, Sharp speaks of his pleasure with the painting and his delight that the buyer has, since visiting his Taos studio, selected it for purchase. It is a very moving glimpse of Sharp parting with a piece of art he very much enjoyed. I understand from my research that Sharpe visited Hawaii (Oahu) for nine consecutive Taos winters prior to WWII and focused on the southeast Oahu coastline for his marine paintings. It is also the dryer section of the island and may have offered plein air painters a kinder weather experience. The area presents unique topography and geology, located after Haunama Bay and before "blow hole", along a trecherous and noisey edge of ocean. I have personally hiked the subject area of this painting. This experience leaves much to the imagination as to how Sharp, well into his 70's, managed to get himself with painting equipment to the vantage point of the painting. But it can be done ! One would be driven by passion to produce this amazing painting. Knowing the site of the painting adds so much more to the energy and vibrance Sharpe captured on canvass. And, he was deaf! I did see a similar painting published in a book of Sharp's Taos paintings. I don't own the book, but I recall it was rather large and appeared to hold a major color collection of Sharp's Indian life paintings, primarily in New Mexico. Good Viewing !

Looking for print of a Joseph Sharp painting About 20 years ago, I was exploring in a oversize book on art related to Native American life in the 19th Century. There was one particular painting which I made a black and white copy of, but I did not write down the name of the artist or the title of the painting.
Recently, I did some exploring of different artists who painted 19th Century Native American life, and on a website, I recognized a familiar theme and style (one person or more in a tepee, brought to life by a unique interpretation of firelight). I now believe that the black and white copy of a painting (mentioned above) is a copy of a painting made by Joseph Henry Sharp.
So I continued my search, looking now (by way of the Internet) in the works of Joseph Henry Sharp; unfortunately, I have not yet found such a painting by Internet search.
I would like to find confirmation of the painters' identity, and, if possible, find a print version of the painting. Here is a description of the painting:
There is a woman seated in a tepee, who seems to be in a contemplative frame of mind. And yet she also seems attentive, in a wistful and dreamlike way, to the music coming from the man playing a flute, just outside the tepee entrance. The light from the fire in the tepee draws attention to the woman. Also noticeable in the painting are a quiver of arrows and some kind of headdress, hanging from the wall of the tepee-- and a basket with three cobs of dried corn in it, on the floor near the woman.
I would very much appreciate any information about the title of the painting-- any information confirming that it is in fact a Joseph Henry Sharp painting.
With Many Thanks and Best Wishes,
Stefan Pasti

A Picture that I have! I have this picture that looks old of a lady named Magdalen. It says painted by Murillo, but in the corner of her picture it says JH SHARP. It also says entered into the library of congress at washington. It is in a real old looking picture frame thats white with gold plaster and the back is old wood you have to pry off to look at it. It also has a stamp you can only see with a light. If anyone has heard of this before please email us Thank You, Laura Pennington.

J H Sharp information My grandmother was Elsie Sharp Booker. Her father was Albert Sharp and his parents were Perry and Maachi Sharp. Maachi was Native American. We are trying to connect Joseph Sharp to our family as we have no information of Maachi's Indian nation. Our family is from Ohio, Joseph Sharp's home state. If anyone has biographical information concerning Joseph Sharp, we would definitely appreciate it.

Sharp Landscapes Most of the collection are landscape floral or tipi scenes, but there is an interesting group of watercolors, unsigned, which I believe are by the artist and which are story plates from an adventure book about pirates! If any of you wish to correspond with me about Sharp, I would appreciate welcome it. timbgordon@aol.com
