Leonard H. Reedy I have two fine Reedys given to me by Bill Findlay of the Findlay Art Galleries. They were wedding gifts. I believe he has around 1100 Reedy watercolors. I'm curious as to their worth.

Leonard Reedy Judy. I was very happy to see your note about L Reedy. I have about 30 w/c's and a close friend has over 100 w/c's and we - as well as several others - would like to get a complete history of LHR on paper if at all possible. I have talked to several dealers and other collectors and while very one has a little information it does not add up to be a enough for a book. The W Finlay gallery did put out a panphlet for one of their exbitions but other than that I have never seen more than a paragraph or two about him. Could you possible give me a middle name for Michael to help making it a little easier to find him. Also I would love to get your stories about LHR down on paper.

Leonard Reedy Leonard Reedy's son, Michael Reedy, is in Bellingham, Washington. I believe he owns none of his dad's paintings. I married Michael in 1961; we divorced in 1968; have 3 children. My children have two water colors acquired from the family, and we have purchased several at auction. We'd like to have more, but they've become more costly in the last couple of years. I personally never met LHR, but heard lots of stories about him; what I've read at the discussion board seems accurate (although I have no knowledge of the personal acquaintences). Many of the taverns in 1930-1950 Chicago acquired LHR paintings by trade as mentioned on the board. Wally Finlay Galleries in Chicago was known to have a collection. Several years ago, a man contacted my mother-in-law (now deceased) and gleaned information from her for a book, but the family was never notified if same was ever published or even completed.

Leonard Reedy -- WOW! Hello! If anyone looking at all these comments will see that I wrote the very first comment 8 years ago! WOW!! I am really impressed by what has been contributed to this discussion about Leonard Reedy. I still have atleast 15 watercolors and the 3 oil paintings. Of anyone in the ENTIRE United States I can guarentee I have seen more Leonard Reedy watercolors and paintings in the last 25 years than ANYONE! I have a book/ photo album of hundreds of Reedy mostly watercolors I have come in contact with. I have been in contact with several museums and it is interesting to know that the Phillip Anshultz Collection in Colorado has about 20 Reedy Watercolors. What to do with all this knowledge? information? little scraps of papers? often baffles me. I still have to say again the comments that were put on the Leonard Reedy discussion were GREAT!!! PLEASE WRITE MORE OF THEM -- PARTICULARLY IF YOU MEET LEONARD REEDY OR KNEW PEOPLE WHO DID!! Regards to you Nick Penachio NY

Do you or do you know any one that has enough information about Reedy that we could cobble together a small book about him. All I have been able to find todate are small pieces - like yours - but nothing that includes a large time frame. I have also heard that there is the possibility that he has a son or a daughter still living in Alaska but I can not get any confirmation. Anyway, I would love to help put together a complete history of this man. Ron

LEONARD H. REEDY Reedy was a very, very, very proliific artist. He had personal problems at times, thus the variation in the quality of his works. There are Reedy's and then there are Reedy's!!!!. He traded his watercolors for food and drink.I had the pleasure of meeting him at the tender age of 8. A relative of mine purchased quite a few works of his.I did a bit of research on him. He apparently passed away in 1956 - but no death certificate can be found on him in Chicago. I believe his certificate of death is on file in Joliet,Illinois with his occupation shown as "house painter".He was kept on ice in order for his son to attend (he had to get leave from the armed services).Joe

More on Reedy The late R. H. Gore, Sr., owner and publisher of the Ft. Lauderdale News and Sentinel collected a great number of the Leonard Reedy paintings. in the early 1930'3 and through 1947 Gore's office was in the Loop in downtown Chicago (a building called the Rookery?)and Reedy would often come in to swap paintings for "lunch money.: A sad but all too familiar story for great painters. Gore was building a motel in Lauderdale-by-the Sea called the Sea Ranch and favored the Reedy paintings for the guest rooms. After Gore's death his children and then in turn the grandchildren inherited a collection of about 25 small water-colors one very large chuck wagon scene (that at best would be described as primitive) one large 4 x 5 oil of cowboys in a snow storm and a simply charming (out of character)oil scene of pointer dogs taking "Time Out" to drink on a fall day in northern woods. This painting was prominently featured at the Governors' Club Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale Fl in the cocktail lounge that was appropriately enough called the "Time Out Lounge." The hotel and motel are now long gone but the pictures still show well and please the grandchildren.

Leonard H. Reedy My grandfather passed on to me 40 watercolors and one oil painted by Leonard H. Reedy. The detail and history this collection contains is most incredible. I am hoping to find a museum that would be interested in showing the collection.

Leonard H. Reedy My uncle, Edward Wentworth, was vice president of Armour & Co (meat packers) in Chicago in the 1940s and early 50s. He also wrote books about cattle trails with painted illustrations. Perhaps that is how Mr. Reedy found him. The family story is that when Mr. Reedy would get down and out from his alcoholism, he would come sell my uncle a watercolor painting to have money again. My father, then my brother and I inherited 7 terrific Western scenes. All contain animals and some have people as well. Now that I live in the part of the West of the paintings, I can really appreciate how accurate they are.

Reedy Prints I was given a collection of framed prints several years ago. At the time I could not find out anything about the artist. I assumed he was a fad, come and gone. I was talking to an artist friend the other day and he was telling me where to find out more info. My question is: Is there any value to these prints? I will love them even if there isn't.

Leonard H. Reedy Years ago I found a western themed watercolor in the attic of a house I had just purchased. A penciled in title says "Breaking a Horse" It has become one of my favorite things and just today I decided to look up the Artists name. How wonderful to find he is so respected. Cant wait to find out more!

Leonard H.Reedy Have found two water colors dated '34 and'37. One seems to be of a wide open plains and a single horseback rider, and the other of Mexican men next to a cantina. Does he have many with a Mexican theme? Also, how do I find out their titles.

Leonard Reedy In over 15 years of collecting Leonard Reedy pieces I have found a definite variance in the quality of his works. His oil paintings are generally very well executed and very fine representations of the Old West. His watercolors are where there is a wide quality of painting differnece. When Leonard Reedy took time to execute and plan his works were on the par of the best Western watercolor painters of the Old West. There are quite afew Reedy watercolors that I have encountered that are very quickly and primatively done. He was extremely prolific and I have seen aleast 100 different Reedy watercolors and about 10 Reedy oils. I own 15 watercolors and 3 oils.
