"Shinnecock Girl" by William Merritt Chase My family and I are interested in knowing where the original drawing by William Merritt Chase would be. The woman in the painting is my great-grandmother, who was a Shinnecock Indian of Southampton, Long Island, NY. It would have been drawn in the late 1800's during the time Mr. Chase and his family lived in Southampton on Long Island. It would be a dream come true to receive any information concerning this portrait.

Merritt signature I recently found an old oil on board, oval shaped, dark tonal landscape I believe to be an early Chase, the painting is oval 22" x 14" under hand cut glass, frame has rounded perimeter, chalkware covered with a bronze colored paint, back of cover board is very aged but I can make out writing in pencil, "Painted ???? Merritt, New York". Is this possibly his work, any idea how he signed early works?
