River painting in the jungle
Can anyone tell me anything about the painting I bought about 10 years ago? I am guessing that it was painted when William was in the service. I would love to know what island and the year if possible. Is there anywhere to see a selection of his paintings?

Painting of my great grandmother,Edith Draper Blair
I have a beautiful portrait of my great great grandmother, Edith Draper Blair..who was William Franklin Blair's aunt..I would love to know if it could have been painted by William F.Blair..it is not signed..he would have been in his twenties..Edith Blair, wife of Montgomery Blair, Jr died in 1939. The painting is of her in old age..very unusual but she has a lovely kind face and it painted so beautifully..very simply with a very dark background..it is quite large in a beautiful handmade, guilded frame..I wonder if William F. Blair has any records left of all he painted..Rikki Condon(my mother was Edith Blair Hollyday),MD

ok
Margaret, met Willie, your brother, and enjoyed his stories about your father. I would love to know more about him. He was a combat painter?

William Franklin Draper
My father, William F. Draper, was a painter of landscapes as well as portraits. He traveled widely, painting scenes almost everywhere he went.

He used to tell a great story about learning to paint from Henry Henche in Provincetown in the early 1930s. Dad had provided his teacher with a second version of the assigned painting exercise, and Henche snapped "This isn't a drawing class, Draper. I wanted a painting!"

Dad loved the irony of this comment from Henche, because Dad's world was about color. To watch him paint, you could see him going at it like a sculpture, carving away at the subject with color.

He used to tell me that he remembered people's names by the colors of the letters.
