Oil Painting Name
To P. Marchand,

We are a gallery that has sold many of Charles Hawthorne’s paintings, many during his lifetime. If you can send me an image of the piece, along with any numbers or labels affixed to the back of the painting (if there are numbers in pencil in the upper right hand corner of the stretcher bar, those are our inventory numbers) then perhaps I could look it up in our inventory books and history files to see if we ever handled it.

Thank you,

Carey Vose

hawthorne pallette
I studied with Henry Hensche for 5 years in the early 50's in ptown. He talked about Hawthorne a lot. The paints have changed a lot since those years but Henry used the finest of Winsor Newton paints. Vermillion red, cobalt, blue, violet, cerulean, the cadmium colors, etc. Always true colors. They make a weaker hue in many of these colors today. The brushes were #3-6 series 27 Bristle brush long hair.Canvas would be from linen to a white lead painted board according to a commision or a casual demo. I use to buy "Hawthorne Medium" for Henry and myself at a lab called Eimer and Amend in Brooklyn N.Y It was excellent for building colors. Prehaps you could find more info in "Hawthorne on Painting".

Hawthorne's palette
Does anyone know what Hawthorne's palette(oil colors)consisted of during his P-town teaching years? I would appreciate any comments regarding pigments, mediums, grounds, brushes etc.
