Family History Research
I have been doing some research and think I may be related to Emil Bisttram through my paternal grandmother, Margaret Bistran. This was her maiden name. Census records also indicated a spelling of "Bistram" for the family. She had a brother, Julius Bistran but records also indicate a much older brother, Emil. Her mother's first name was Emelia, but also spelled Ammelia on some records. Any information would be helpful and appreciated. Email is lindeman06@msn.com

Bisttram School of Fine Art in Los Angeles
My father studied with Emil Bisttram at the Bisttram School of Fine Art in Los Angeles in (roughly) 1947-49. I have brochures from the School as well as an announcement of a Student Exhibition held May 6-15, 1949. I do not, however, see the Los Angeles school mentioned in any of Bisttram's biographical information. My father studied on the GI bill after service during WWII. The school was "approved for veterans" as stated in one of the brochures. The school was apparently founded to respond to the large number of returning veterans who entered school on the GI bill in the Los Angeles area. One brochure announces a "Summer Field Course" offered in Taos, New Mexico, beginning May 23, 1949 until August 18, 1949. There is, however, no other mention of the Taos group in any of the brochures for the Bisttram School of Fine Art. The Los Angeles school was located at 636 South Ardmore at Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 5, Calif.

I live in Taos and have many old timer friends who spoke about Bisttram, one was Malcomb Brown, Taos Artist & resident from 1943 who is now deceased, as of last year, said of Bisttram,"he came across a pretty tough guy, he used to box in his younger years. But, he was friendly and quite serious about his work." He lived for a time on the far right side of the Harwood Museum, which looks like it's part of the Harwood musuem, but it's not. Now I believe it's still a private residence. I live on Kit Carson Rd. My great grandfather was Dr.Harry P. Mera, The Santa Fe doctor who wrote many books on SW Indian art, worked extensively at the Lab. of Anthropology in Santa Fe, He was good friends with Gustave Bauman, John Gaw Meems and also one of three people entrusted with Mary Austin's estate.

Emil Bisttram
I am related to Emil Bisttram through my maternal Grandfather, George Rasegan (anglicized), who emigrated from Hungary at the turn of the century. If anyone has any biographical details relating to the Bisttram family or genealogy, I would appreciate hearing from them. Many thanks, Kim

BISTTRAM
I wrote my PhD dissertation on Bisttram at CUNY: "The Politics of Redemption: Dynamic Symmetry, Theosophy, and Swedenborgianism in the Art of Emil Bisttram (1895-1976)." It only covers his life and work through 1945. I would like to hear from anyone having works by Bisttram or anyone who has any recollections of him.
