I have seen a number of copies of Kauba's pieces since, even in collections, that I would deem copies. The craftsmanship of the Vienna tradition during Kauba's time and even today are impeccable, if you stay with the top houses.
I would be interested in seeing some hi-res digital photos of some of the better pieces out there that are not copies. Please include details of especially intricate areas as well as the signature and stamp.

Soldier's horse - Carl Kauba
I recently bought a bronze 17" by 17" horse with a signatue of Carl Kauba. It appears to be a soldier's horse as it has a sword, saddle and gear in back of saddle. Does anyone know the name and how do you tell it is a n original?

how can you tell a kauba original from a reproduction. i'm looking at a 5' tall indian chief in full headdress holding a rifle crossarmed. it's on a bronze base signed c kauba on the right front and 4 letters on the left rear that i believe were OSAB.

WAR
My husband and I purchased "WAR" about 20 years ago at a flea market in Washington D.C.--At the time, we didn't know its name or anything about the author, but the detail is breath-taking. How do we find out if it is an original? It is signed C K and there is a hard-to read seal. Along the bottom of the circle we can make out VIENNA, and it looks like maybe numbers in the middle. The statue is about 28 inches high and is very heavy.

I have a Carl Kauba piece with notation that it is called "Mexican Rustler" and produced in 1911. I have not been able to find out anything about this. It has his signature on base.

I have a "Bronco Buster" statue that is about 9" tall that is signed by C Kauba" but I can't find where he ever did a piece by that name. Does anyone know? It is not the Remington one.

I have a small bronze statue that I think is C. Kauba's. It's from my grandmother who recently passed. I would love to find out the story of this piece. Looks like the head of a mariner. Wearing a fishing hat and smoking a pipe. Its a number piece. 4529

I have done a fair amount of research on Kauba, both in English and in German (I am a native speaker of the German language)
I Googled not only on the US web, but also on the German (google.de) and Austrian site (Google.at)
I have come across a lot of (lost wax?) copies, but you can usually tell even from the poor pictures on the sites. Details are just not there.
When I compare my "War" to copies offered, there is no comparison; for example, the feathers of the head dress are detailed, with the bindings at the tips not just flat copper strips, twisted and brazed to the statue (as I see often on Remington copies as well, a contemporary of Kauba). They are cast in one piece, quite a feat, but it was done in the best shops of greater Vienna, with a tradition for artisan craftsmanship.
There is a question wether Kauba ever made it for a trip to the US. Many sources say he did not; if you read the sources language, it all seems to come from one original source and has been copied over and over.
It does'nt really matter. Kauba was an admirer of Indians and the "Wild West" as it was made popular by the German author Karl May, who wrote quite a few tomes on the subject, and as young children we devoured them (I remember reading late into the night, secretly by flashlight under my covers).
If you can tell me where I can find the companion piece to my "War" (it is "Peace" of course, and I have seen copies) I would appreciate it, as I would other information on Kauba as well.
