Maurice (Valadon) Utrillo No 1660 Lithp I have a Utrillo litho no 1660that came ot of my parents home. It appears to be on cardborad type material and in a frame of an off gold color. Picture is of a downtown area with a wind mill in the background and a store with a sign that reads "Vins Et Ligugure" (Close). Signature in lowerr right is Maurice Utrillo V. and word in left lower corner appears to be "Montanartre" (Or something like that. There are people walking along the street, 7 in all. Can anyone tell me anything about this painting/print. It also says in VERY small print across the bottom, Donald Art Co. Inc NY No. 1660 and on the right side bottom Litho in USA.

Maurice Utrillo V Just recently I realized that I may have a valuable painting by Maurice Utrillo V. I found this paint out on the curb for garbage pickup about 4 years ago and it's been hanging on my wall ever since. This painting is signed Maurice Utrillo V in the lower right-hand corner. This painting is of two people standing in the front of a liquor store. The paint has the word (ET Liqus_urs) on the front of a red building, there is a tree painted in front of the building that blocks the writing on the building. Behind the red building there are a couple of other buildings that are white with turquoise colored shudders and red roof. The paint with the frame measures 10" x 26". The back of the frame and picture are covered in brown paper. The painting is done on white artist board. I'm not sure if its a copy or not. If anyone have any information on this painting, I would very much appreciate your feedback.

On the left bldg's w/ cracks on them and 4 windows 2 doors.Words that i can see Cam,Vafin,Agile on 1 of the bldg's. Maurice,Utrillo,V aouit 1923, Hello Thomas,I hope you can help me. The picture measures 16inches x 20 inches. There is a fountain on the lower left with the wording p.festival and orthez. There are 4 women and 1 man walking up the street in the center. Onto the left is a partial sign onto a red building reading Rie. Onto the right I think it reads Annmaison. There are connected buildings all the way up the street. The store roofs are painted in red. Is this anything you have seen before? Thankyou for taking the time to learn about this artist and help all of us out with our finds

utrillo print I have a maurice utrillo print. I looked at it closely, it is signed in the lower right hand corner. I don't know if the signature is authentic. I looked at the printing with a loupe and it is comprised of small dots not lines. I was told if it was comprised of lines it was definaltely a later print. I don't want to remove the paper from the back of the frame. There is nothing on the front of the print that have the letters many of the postings have eluded to such as dacny or nygs. signature appears to be chalk or pastel on the lower right corner. print is marked cercle catholique du sacre-coeur- by maurice utrillo. Where do I go to see if this is an authentically signed print?

Maurice Utrillo I have a small (about 9x11 in.) painting (gouache and/or oil on paperboard) signed in ink on the reverse ____rice (partly torn off from tape have been laid over) Utrillo. I purchased it a number of years ago unframed, but didn't recognize the style or notice the signature until much later. It is of several frame houses close-up with trees in front in winter. I'm intereseted in finding the best way to determine whether this is an original Utrillo painting. The signature is perhaps more like he would have signed a letter, and I'm guessing it was signed on the back because because he didn't want it to interfere with the effect of the trees in front of the houses. It does seem to show distinctive Utrillo characteristics of painting style from the examples I have studied on-line. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Utrillo To Bealorne: I don't know what you mean by Utrillo's earlier signature. Other than the first year when Utrillo signed his work Maurice Valadon and a few times when Sue Valadon signed his work for him, Utrillo's signature never changed. A bona fide expert would be hard pressed to date a Utrillo painting by the signature. A more likely sign would be the colors of the paints used or just the general aura of the work itself. White mannerism paintings are easily identified by those who know what a white mannerism painting is. Unfortunately, I get the impression (no pun intended)that even most "experts" do not know what makes a white mannerism a white mannerism. I believe that I own a white mannerism which has enabled me to realize why it is a white mannerism. The French language is literal so whoever coined the phrase "le mannerism blanc" was literally saying that the painting has white behavior. White paint has white behavior by definition, it is white, so it is unlikely the person was refering to the white paint. The person was saying that the paint that isn't white is behaving like it is white. How can paint that isn't white behave like it is white? When you look at a white mannerism painting in the dark the whole painting will appear white; it will have a white, ghastly glow. The colors that aren't white in the light will appear white in the dark, they will behave like they are white, like they have "le mannerism blanc". I beieve Utrillo achieved this effect by mixing lime (the kind used for landscaping and sports fields) with the non-white paints. If you have ever seen a lime pile or a sports field in the dark then you have seen the white ghastly glow that the lime emits, the same white glow you see when you look at a white mannerism Utrillo in the dark.

Utrillo Montmartre Pair Ihave two Utrillo paintings. One has 'Sacre`-Coeur de Montmartre Et Square Saint. Pierre' in bottom left hand corner with 'Maurice, Utrillo, V,1928 in lower right corner. Picture of people walking up path towards white buildings. The other picture seems to go with it. Same buildings but painted from other side of buildings. Looking from the other way. Have received these after my pop passed away. Want information as want to look after them but wanted to know whether they should be removed from original frames or left as is. Any info would be fantastic. Thank you.

Le Moulin de La Galette I have found this to be true, but I also have investigated that it is the same image of the 1930 version only I believe it to be 1909 as it bears the same signature style as the 1909 paintings and also there differences in landscape, and the alleyway has a building which isn't present in the comparable 1930's image. It is on cardboard as well and it bears a total resemblance to the 1909 version which is by a slightly different name hence different view.
07/17/2009 Thomas
Utrillo To Bealorne: Utrillo painted dozens of paintings of le moulin de la gallette, which is the name of one of the three famous windmills in Montmartre, another one being the moulin rouge. They are some of his most famous paintings and the windmills, if not the subject, are evident in the background of the majority of his Montmartre paintings.

Maurice Utrillo I have what really appears by all definitions and investigations an origional Maurice Utrillo from the "white period". It is called "Les Moulins de La Galletto. I cannot find ANY information on this painting other than Picasso and Rembrant also have done very famous portraits of the same place. Could it be that is has never been established that Utillo also did this portrait in Montemarte if not secondary but perhaps primarily before Rembrant and Picasso? Would like to establish the significance to my painting which came from Holland.

Rue Ordener, Montmartre My Utrillo was bought by my mother in the 60s or 70s at an estate sale. It has a label on the back that gives the artist, dates, that it's 27"X36" and title on the back that says: Oil on Canvas, dated 1916. Collection of Max Moos, Geneva. Does that mean anything to anybody?

Utrillo I see that my comments about the "official " Utrillo site have been removed even though everyone who knows anything about them agrees with me. These "official" Utrillo people have been thrown out of half the auction houses in Europe for trying to disrupt the sales of Utrillo paintings. Whatever you do, don't take your piece to France. All these "official" people have to do is tell the French police they think that its fake and the police will take it from you and there is nothing you can do to get it back, short of having your country declare war on them. Just research Utrillo and you will also see that it is impossible for anyone to have a complete catalog of Utrillo's work. Its even preposterous to think anyone does. Right, Todd?

Possible Utrillo painting To Thomas: I agree with you as well as to the Utrillo Museum. I have a Utrillo - gouache on paper dated June 1923 - that I tried to get them to "authenticate" a couple of years ago. I believe it to be real as I can document its provenance back to 1928. They asked for money up front and that I email a photograph (b&w) to them. They were more interested in the money and then sent back a response that the work was a print - with which I do not concur. I would not waste time or money with these folks again.

possible Utrillo oil painting Thomas, My comment was not meant as an insult. I was holding you up as the expert since i am an amateur at best. I do have a tape measure now and the dimensions in the frame are 10 7/8 X 13 7/8. It is also stamped on the back of the frame Maison MiMi, France. Utrillo. it is almost identical to one I have seen on the internet called La Maison Mimi Pinson montmartre, except mine is a winter scene and it has people in it. I hope to get it to the restoration expert this week. please comment

Is size really the difference in Utrillo Work I have two paintings or what ever of his work that are 17.5 x 14.5 . A art dealer had to take one out of frame to tell if it was real or a copy. And he still was not sure. Now I see on the discussion board that these numbers may be a real Utrllo work of art. I guess I have to go to find out if Antique Road Show is around town. Any idea's from Thomas Guthrie would help, thanks

Utrillo Its possible a small Utrillo ended up in the Sears art sale sice Renoirs, Picassos, Chagalls and numerous others did. How do the measurements not "jive" with what I say? You say you didn't have a tape measure and I say 99[%] of Utrillo dimensions are not round numbers. Are you approximating sixteenths and eighths of an inch? And 99[%] means that some do.
05/20/2009 Michael Daigneault
possible Utrillo oil painting In about 1963 my grandmother and her boyfriend went to sears and roebuck and bought what they were told was an original painting for $200 from the vincent price collection. She had no idea who Utrillo was, she just liked the painting. for 45 years my parents have said it was an original and I told them that you would not have been able to get an original for $200 ecspecially from sears. After five minutes of reasearch on the internet it appears that vincent Price was an art scholar and he did have a relationship with sears and he did buy originals as well as prints for sears. the approximate dimensions are about 12 x 16 i dont have a tape measure handy. I know those measurements dont jive with what thomas guthrie has to say. I did take it to a local art gallery in frederick maryland about 40 miles outside of DC and he put it under a magnifying glass. he said he couldnt tell me it wasnt, but dont get my hopes up. He told me to take it to a friend of his who is a restoration expert who was familiar with Utrillo and she can do some ferensics on it to at least determine if age and materials use are consistent with that time period and the artist. please comment

Utrillo, Maurice I have what I believe to be possibly a lithograph of a Painting by Maurice Utrillo. It has in the lower left margin Giraudon Paris and in the right hand Margin, Hertage Publications, Inc. 1966. It appears to be glued to a piece of cardboard or board. The size is 24 inches high by 36 inches wide. It has Rue"Jeanne, dirc"prolong'ce, a Paris on the left side of the print and Maurice, Utrillo,V,1934 on the right hand lower corner of the painting. Can anyone give me any info on this. Thanks

Utrillo To Laura: The DAC NY means that it isn't a painting. It stands for Donald Art Company, New York which was a company that distributed art reproductions and novelties in the first half of the twentieth century, usually in the form of wall hangings and picture (jigsaw) puzzles. Any piece with this or any other marking that isn't handwritten in French is not original since early twentieth century French people hardly spoke any English and NY wasn't the center of the universe until much later.

Utrillo To Jessica: Do not send them any money. Their goal in life is to convince the world that any Utrillo painting they do not own is a forgery, whether it is or isn't. There is no such thing as an official Utrillo site, he has been dead for over fifty years. Official according to them maybe, especially when people are sending them $100 for their nonsense. For one thing, you can't determine anything from a picture and for another, no one has a complete catalog of Utrillo's paintings. By the time anyone had even heard of Utrillo he had already hawked countless paintings on the street corners of Montmartre to world travelers for mere pennies. The best way to understand Utrillo and your piece is to research the artist in your local Libraty, on the web and any other source you can find. His story is very interesting and well worth knowing. Knowing the artist will greatly help you to see the genius in his work, whether original or reproduced.

Validating Maurice Utrillo Works of Art To validate your Maurice Utrillo works go to the official site for the works of Maurice Utrillo and Susan Valadon and the Utrillo Museum will validate whether your painting is in fact an original or a fake. Maurice Utrillo was an extremely prolific French artist.

Utrillo To those of you who think you have a real Utrillo: Measure the support (painting) carefully and exactly. Utrillo works are very rarely a round number but reproductions always are. A Utrillo painting has a 99[%] chance of measuring something like 19 7/8 inches X 30 1/8 inches and a one [%] chance of measuring 16 x 20 or 20 x 30.

I have no idea whether they are of any value aside from esthetic purposes. The prints are framed very securely but are definitely faded. Windmills of Montmartre I have recently pulled out of the garage an old painting that has been in the family for over 50 years. Looking at it we noticed that it is an oil painting not a print.
It resembles the painting by Maurice Utrillo 'windmills of montmatre however it does not have the colour red.
It seems to be painted on a hard board and there is two lines of text above the signature in the corner however we cannot read it. There is the word 'Montmartre' in middle at the bottom.
On the back of the frame is a two line black stamp : 1631 Montmartre (Utrillo 1883-1955)
I cannot tell if there is a V after the signature as I think the frame covers the corners of the painting.
Can anyone assist with information of how to find out if it is real or fake and a possible value? Thank you

Maurice Utrillo Looking at a real Utrillo painting is like falling into the rabbit hole. You end up in a strange world full of infinite magic and eternal wonder. You could stay in the rabbit hole forever. You can't get to the rabbit hole from pictures or reproductions or forgeries. No artist can paint what Heaven looks like but Utrillo was a master at painting what Heaven feels like. They are not paintings of a few simple buildings. The buildings don't have anything to do with the paintings. They are just the vehicle that delivers the cargo.

Utrillo Three Windmills I have a framed picture, I think it is a print that someone tried to make look old. The frame is dark green with brushed gold knobby edge. Appers to be on hard backed board. I have not taken the back off, paper and wire hanger. Three wind mills in scene with Hotel building marked in foreground Can someone help idnetify this?
10/25/2008 Thomas Guthrie
Maurice Utrillo To Barbara: Yes, I can help. It is a lithograph at best and more likely a reproduction of a litho. Utrillo never even heard of the American litho co. N.Y.G.S. Any item with this mark or any other mark that isn't handwritten/painted in French is obviously not original and not valuable. NYGS is the acronym for New York Graphic Society. Graphic as in lithographic..in other words, a comp. that makes reprod. of other people's work. A litho is not valuable unless the actual plate used to create the print was made by the artist. In these cases the signature is usually backwards and the work will more likely than not be signed and numbered by the artist.

Utrillo I have 2 Utrillo pictures-prints don't know which. I bought the larger one in New York at a thrift store several years ago. I measures 23.5x29.5 in. It is an offwhite frame. It has a plaque attached saying Eglise de strins. The picture is signed Maurice, Utrillo, V,. I also purchased a smaller one at a thrift store in Denver a couple years ago. It measures 11x14 in. I think it might be Le Moulin de la Galette. It is sigmed the same way.

maurice utrilla v. painting found at my aunts grandpas house that the famil this painting is probably real because my aunts grandparents lived in this house for over a hundred years it is like a museum so maany antiques and misc. stuff that is real and in mint condition. The picture is framed with a oak looking frame no glass it has a total of 5 people walking on the streets with a couple on the right hand side of the street 2 walking to the church in the middle of the canvas and 1 person by themselvesto left side of the street. It has a restaurant on the right side and something like a theatre to the left with three chappels in the middle of the painting. It says something about St. Pierre onthe bottom left hand side with somehting underneath it but the frame covers the writing. The back of the picture has a paper on it so i dont want to ruin by peeling it off. The reason i think this one is real is because they have a whole bunch of stuff going back to WWI ansd WWII, so the authenticity is more than likely 100[%] real how to find out would be helpful.

maurice utrillo "eglise de strins" I would love to put this issue to rest regarding a painting/or reproduction I have. Bought a Utrillo painting at a thrift store several years ago. I have a woman who supposedly sent my painting to Boston to supposedly get it authenticated. I am supposedly getting an authentification stating it is original. I took it to a local art gallery who confirmed it is fake. I would just love to know where the original "Eglise de Strins" is. Or...if it is listed in the Catalogue de Raisonne(?sp.) by Paul Petrides. This has driven me nuts. You cannot feel actual brush strokes. The lady that had interest in this says that it was because it was painted on cardboard and over time the brush strokes and paint are absorbed into it. If this is all a fabricated story on her part, I don't understand being taken on a joy ride. And...are reproductions worth anything or no more than the seven dollars I paid for it five years ago???? Thanks for any responses.

Utrillo I have a couple of Utrillo paintings (supposedly). After reading info' on how he is the most copied artist probably of all time, I really have my doubts. However submitting some kind of info' to you guys could not hurt anything.
I have one, that does not have a frame. It looks like a Seville scene with what looks like 4 people walking down the street. Whats odd is that it is signed on the LEFT side of the picture. It is signed : Maurice Utrillo.V.
On the back of the boards which I am assuming are the frame lost support, is the words: 102-CHURCH OF ST. SEVERIN - UTRILLO
The other picture is so darn old, it is hard to make out his name good. I do not know art, but I do know frames and wood. This is a old frame and the canvas is even folding because apparently someone left in a humid environment for a long period of time. I am afraid to even take it apart, it does not look like it will make it back together.
They are fakes, aren't they?
10/03/2008 Thomas Guthrie
Maurice Utrillo To Kim: You just described 3,000 Utrillo paintings. What size is it? What is the support its painted on? What are the colors.? What does the frame look like? Have you looked at it with a very strong magnifying glass, preferably an eye loupe? Take the back apart and look at it. Take the whole thing apart, it doesn't hurt it. Its probably a litho or a giclee but remember, we can't see it. Thomas

Maurice Utrillo I have what looks to be a painting by Maurice Utrillo. Fall street scene. a couple walking in the street, a lady walking on the side walk to the left, and two people, one on the sidewalk and one on the street to the right. The painting is signed by Maurice Utrillo v on the lower rt corner. No date. I haven't checked the back for any info. The painting is framed rather tightly. Any info anyone can give me on how to find out if this painting is real or not would be greatly appreciated

Information on Maurice Utrillo V, 1929 I have prints of this painting, how can I tell if it's an original print. It is that of a street scene, a man and woman walking together, another woman walking behind them.
08/07/2008 Roberta Franzese
Maurice Utrillo To Thomas Guthrie, I agree with you completely. How can anyone have kept track of what was painted and sold or given away on the streets of Montmartre given the circumstances of Maurice Utrillo's life. I too have a painting I am convinced is a real Utrillo. It has minimal brush strokes and is so paper thin the canvas actually shows through on one corner. Anyone wanting to forge would have completed the painting. The painting is magical.
07/30/2008 Thomas Guthrie
Maurice Utrillo Those of you that have a Utrillo with N.Y.G., Turner, D.A.C. or similar marks are obvious reprods. They are all litho co.s from the 1st half of the cent. Those with V... on the back are most likely the same as I have never heard of these markings on origs. Chelsea is no xpert. Millions of copies weren't sold in the 20th + 21st cent., Utr. didn't even start painting till 03-05. Its true that some forg. were created once Utr. became popular but what was said to be 100s was prob. closer to dozens. I think the forg. is 10[%] fact and 90[%] art soc. hype to devalue the real Utr. that he gave away on the street corners. Utr did paint on heavy crdbrd,, esp in early yrs. Although famous for impasto, if you look at books of Utr. bonafide pntng. u'll see 1 thing noticeably missing from most of his work. Brush strokes. The impasto pntr made way more pnting sans brshstrks than with. He used melted crayons and oils and spread the paint thin with a palette knife. He mixed his own pigments creating strange pnts using substitute oils. Many of his pnt. surfaces are picture thin, the reason his peers called them "postcards". His goal and his quote was "Not ordinary..not ordinary at all." If nothing else a real utr. pnt. will be weird, but in a magical way. The longer you look at it the stranger it will get and if its real you'll know it. Because it will knock you over. Eventually u'll see what brought Modigliani to his knees and made him declare Utr the gratest pntr ever. And u'll feel like the pnt. is harboring a secret. And it is. Another thing u'll notice is that utr would actually be one of the hrdst pnt to forge. U cld frge the motif, the colors, the sign. but u would have to be quite the genius indeed to forge Utrillo. I know because I have one + it will take a lot of work to convince me its fake. I can almost prove it isn't. I've done 2 yrs of xtensive rsrch on Utr and the one thing I am sure of is this. The real fakes are most of the "experts".

for thoses who think there original the chances of any of these painitngs being real are slim to none. my partner and mother are both experts in the arts. so I know my stuff. maurice utrillo was one of the most faked artists of the 20th century, the chances of these being real are something like 100000 to 1. millions of copys were sold in the the 20th and 21st century so i would be very suprised to hear these are real.

Maurice Utrillio I have a piece of artwork that was my fathers and have been unsuccessful in finding any information on it. It is the usual somewhat abstract scene and signed by Maurice Utrillio. The label on the back of the frame says Montmartre. It seems to be a light oil on mountboard...it does have texture to it. It is a scene with a large church in the background and a few people are walking towards it. Any ideas where I can find out more?

Maurice Utrillo Estate Finds I have 2 Utrillo paintings: One is dated on front left 1923 signed Maurice Utrillo Aout is street scene Montmarte. One has label on back: #2978 20"x24" La Rue Rustique Maurice Utrillo. Does anyone know about these?
03/21/2008 Thomas
Utrello -genuine or fake? After the war, my German Father brought to America a painting, 17.5" x 21", which he had owned since the late 20's and which, he was always proud to tell all and sundry, was a Utrillo. Only after inheriting it after his death did I realise that the painting is unsigned. The subject is a courtyard behind an open gate with 3 x 2 story buildings, left right and center, including a sort of tower. It is done with some heavy paint application looking darkish and not at all like his much lighter, later work. Too, there is no signature visible. Does anybody have any idea whether my Father had a major fake foisted on him or whether this might be an early work. If it's not genuine why would the faker not have appended a fake signature? Thoughts, anybody?

Rue Bayen a Paris I have this oil on board painting which has been in my family for at least 30 to 40 years. Today I found it in Paul Petrides, "L'oeuvre complet de Maurice Utrillo" on a visit to The Boston Museum of Fine Arts Library. My excitement is diminished when I see that the book says that it's size is 55 by 73CM. My painting is 12 by 16 inches. How can I find out where the original Rue Bayen a Paris is located? Maybe I have it?

Maurice, Utrillo, V. I have an old painting of Maurice Utrillo, V. It has the words Rue De St. Vincent on the left hand side and his signature on the right. I purchased this several years ago at a thrift store. I understand that he was one of the most reproduced french artists. Is there a way to check for authenticity? Could the print still be worth something if not an original? Have been curious for quite some time now. Thanks.
01/28/2008 shannon
1926 oil on canvas utrillo painting I have heard that utrillo was one of the most reproduced french artist. I asked her where she got them and she told me, when she brought the house she found them in the basement. Now one of the mark Montmarte and signed by Maurice Utrillo V. Also in the back. The frame is kind of white, but these paintings are old. I would like to have a feedback. Thanking you for your cooperation.

Identify Utrillo Litho Identify Lithograph by Maurice Utrillo In purchasing a new home I found a lovely litho. Information is as follows: Left hand corner title reads Montmartre. Signature right hand corner is Marurice, Utrillo, V. Donald Company, Inc. NY No. #1656B is in the left bottom edge margin and Litho USA is in the left bottom edge margin. Dimensions are 11"H x 14"W. I have searched but not found this particular scene. Top right is a windmill covered with buildings and foliage. A storefront with "Vins et Liqueurs" is the central focus and a side street off to the left ascends to the top of the painting. There are black skirted women and some men; 7 characters painted into the litho all together. Is anyone able to identify this litho?

Utrillo Print? I found This piece has to be a reprint unless he painted on cheap poster board from the 1933's. It is titled Eylise Saint-Pierre et Saint Goeur de Montmartre. I found it in the attic of a house built in the early 1930's. Should I hang on to it or is it cheap tourist stuff. It is about 2'by21/2'. Thanks for any word on it. Jennifer

utrillo watercolor I have a watercolor of a street scene with people signed utrillo. It's not a poster as there are no dot patterns. The lines around the painting are straight--the color doesn't go over the line. Would this be an original by any chance? Or something else? It was purchased in Austria decades ago.

Print on canvas I found in my Dad's house a print of a Montmartre scene -- it is on canvas, stretched and stapled on a wooden stretcher. The name Fredi is engraved into the stretcher, I'm guessing is the brand of stretcher. Montmartre by Maurice Utrillo is printed on the margin of the canvas. Is this a common way of doing a print? Thanks.

Could it be authentic? I'm sure the chances are very small that my grandmother would have an authentic Maurice Utrillo painting, but, I wanted to find out more in order to help her out; she is planning an estate sale and came across the painting in "hand me downs" she received and stored from her mother.
Anyway, the painting is not on canvas but a hardboard of some sort. It shows an image of two women, a couple, and a single woman walking in the street. It is a view of a corner and on one side is "Cafe Du Nord" on the other is a small sign "Limas-Rhone". The corner building is 3 stories tall and has bright green shutters on it. The colors are all pretty bright. It is signed in the lower left-hand corner (as you look at the painting) Maurice Utrillo, V. 1929. Can anyone help with this?
Thanks,

Utrillo Famous French Artisti Utrillo worked in the period slightly prior the impressionists, coresponding more with post impressionism. His works generally date in the late 19th to mid 18th C as he dies in 1955. His works consist of 3 major movemets the most popular being the white period dating before 1915 and the colorist period being 1916-30's. If you own an authentic Utrillo i would get it aprazed as they have been known to sell for thousands depending on the period and size.

Help identifying painting My father has a painting that was given to him by my great grandmother. It is very large...approximately 4'wide x 5' tall. It is of a dark haired woman standing on a cliff looking out upon a storming sea, as if waiting for someone to return. The colors are very dark and the painting is somber. I don't see a signature, but it could be covered by the very large guilded frame. Any ideas on how to identify the painting? I would guess that it is very old. Thanks.

Maurice Utrillo Montmartre I have 3 of Maurice utrillo's Montmartre prints one dated 1930. Two are very large and 1 is smaller. Even the Montmartre prints sell easy, but his other prints don't really fetch a huge amount at all. His paintings really do good. any feedback will be appreciated here.
Thanks!

Rue-Jeanne d'Arc I have what appears to be an original oil on canvas of this painting (22x17) in a ornate frame with a metal plaque displaying the title and artist. The frame and plaque appears to be of museum quality. The painting clearly has visible brush strokes and oil massings - Signed and dated 1934 in the lower (R) - title in the lower (L). The back has red-ink stenciling on the frame with the letters "IMCO" and faint blue print on the canvas that is unreadable. Any idea on the likelihood on the authenticity of this painting?

Utrillo/ask art Hi, You can take you artwork to a gallery or a good frame shop and they should be able to tell you if it's a print or painting. He also did pastels(chalks) if you rub the artwork and it comes off. I am going to take a large chalk of his to a appraiser on 2/2 to see if they can authenticate it. Also go to a library and they will have books on him or they can contact another library that does and they can have the book transferred to your library. That's what I did. If it is a watercolor glass would be over it. If it's oil you can tell by the finish. It shouldn't look fake at all. Good luck. Cheryl

Utrillo, Maurice His mother's name was Suzanne Valadon. She was a model for many artists, including Renoir. She later became a fine woman artist.

Utrillo, Maurice He was an artist who was taught to paint by his mother, a woman artist. She taught him to paint to detract him from drinking. I cannot think of his mother's name. She is included in the collection of women artists at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
