LGainsborough's Lady Spencer I obtained a 15"x20" oil painting of an 18th century woman in white lace gown with a larger black velvet hat holding roses in her lap. The elderly woman I obtained this from lived in Burbank, California in 1977. She said she bought it at auction (I believe from the Guggenheim Museum in Pasadena). It has an auction number in pencil on the back of the frame (20381). She also said there were five of these paintings made: two were in museums, two owned by private parties and one is unaccounted for. She said it was 98 years old (in 1977). Much to my surprise I saw a story on the original painting in the December 1994 Reader's Digest. The original was painted by Gainsborough. Does anyone know anything of Gainsborough copies?
