Ellen Rand Your question on 11/14 asked about Ellen's husband. His name wasn't Paul Rand. It was William Blanchard Rand.

Portrait of a Man in White Ellen Gertrude Emmet Rand went by the name Bay Rand when she was young. According to my research at the Smithsonian she shared a studio in Paris with John Singer Sargent in 1898. Sargent admired Bay Rand's work and bought 20 paintings of hers. I recently bought a great painting by Bay Rand: it is a watercolor of two young men sitting in a room smoking pipes. One wearing a white hat is dressed in all white shirt and pants. His friend is in all black with leather boots and spurs. Anyone have any idea if this is Paul Rand, her husband?

6 foot mystery....Mrs. Hanna? The Hubbard Museum of the American West, in Ruidoso Downs,NM (affiliated with the Smithsonian) has a beautiful, 6-foot tall portrait, signed in the top right-hand corner..."Ellen Emmet 1911"....the full-length portrait is of a woman in black riding apparel, including riding crop and black hat. The only documentation we have is "MRS. HANNA." The portrait is part of a large collection, donated to the museum by Anne C. Stradling of the Schley and Rogers families of Hyde Park,NY; Far Hills,NJ and Aiken SC. Later in life, Anne lived in Patagonia, AZ and had her own museum of mostly American West artifacts. We think "Mrs. Hanna" might be the 3rd wife of DAN R. HANNA. Their country estate was the "Croft" in Tarrytown, NY. They also lived in Ohio. Any word from the HANNA FAMILY would be most beneficial. THE HUBBARD MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN WEST is on the internet. Gwen M. is the Collections Curator. Thank you.

Ellen emmet rand In 1901 Ellen Emmet made portraits of Maude Lorillard Tailer (1876-1922) and of The Hon Cecil Baring (later 3rd Lord Revelstoke, 1864-1834). Mrs Tailer and Mr Baring were married the following year. Cecil Baring had also been painted by Ellen’s cousin Jane Emmet (later Jane de Glehn). We still have Ellen’s portraits and would be glad to share images of them with any bona fide researchers. Louis Jebb

Many thanks! Joan Knight

Bayard Cutting Portrait A portrait of Mr. Cutting painted by Ellen Emmett Rand hangs in the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River, Long Island.
This work clearly shows the influence of W.M. Chase whose Shinnecock School was just a few miles from Great River.

FDR portrait I have a catalogue of a portrait exhibition called "Mr. President" held at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts for the State Fair of Texas in 1956. Among the exhibitions was an Ellen Emmett Rand portrait of Franklin Roosevelt. It is unlike any I have ever seen of FDR, with brushy agitated strokes and leaving some canvas blank. The face is quite finished, but the clothes and background merely sketched. The style somewhat reminds one of Howard Chandler Christie. The painting belonged (in 1956) to the Milch Galleries, courtesy of Mrs. Helen Hackett of New York.
