Are posters of Maynard Dixon of any value? I have the Earth Knower, it has his name across the top in large letters. It is signed and has 1931-32-35 and tiny writting below this that I can't make out.Found it in an antique store. Thanks, Phil Carter

From what I can gather Maynard Dixon, son of Harry St John Dixon, Confederate Cavalry hero erstwhile CA lawyer/rancher) also worked on the decorative metalwork for El Alisal in Los Angles in 1898..which is perhaps where (his son?) Harry (St John) Dixon ( apprenticeded with Van Erp)became the famous coppersmith that he did.

Maynard Dixon sketch on Roadshow
There was, about four years ago, an appraisal on the Antiques Roadshow of a Maynard Dixon pencil/graphite sketch. There have been several on the Roadshow, but this one in particular had a penciled border around the drawing, underneath Dixon had dated the drawing, and had also written comments about the atmosphere with ideas for colors of the possible future painting. The other sketches that have been on the Roadshow didn't have the personal notes written in underneath the sketch.
If anyone remembers/recorded that episode of the Roadshow, I would surely appreciate a jpeg (if you can manage it) of that sketch, and the name/auction house of the appraiser. Thanks

Palace of Fine Arts Mural Competition
In 1934 Maynard Dixon was working on mural designs for the ceiling of the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda in San Francisco. We have one design,titled

Severl characters (10+) behind hitching post watching cowboy shot holes in any air borne can as they are tossed up by barber. Any idea where I could research this and see if it was ever used in print?

The painter and commercial artist Harry Bonath and Maynard Dixon were classmates at the California School of Fine Arts. Harry went on to make a name for himself in Seattle.

Maynard Dixon - Brete Harte Characters
In 1903 Maynard Dixon painted a series of “Posters” (approx 20" x 30" each) depicting his vision of several of Bret Harte’s characters for an event at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. Included were Yuba Bill, Colonel Starbottle, Jack Hamlin, Tennessee’s Partner, Brown of Calaveras, Truthful James, Heathen Chinee. Mliss, and Luck of Roaring Camp. Does anyone out there have any information about these posters?
