Admitted to the Academy Royal of Brussels at age 11, he became a leading figure in Surrealism. Severe wounds in WWI left him emotionally scarred and pessimistic, with a lifelong curiosity about the destiny of man. In the U.S., Gorky, Rothko, and Pollock were influenced by Masson's ideas and methods.
