As a war artist for Life magazine in Burma and India during WWII, he witnessed scenes of famine and death that effected his work upon his return, and his depictions of the urban poor. This multi-talented painter was also an architect and mosaic artist, who traveled the globe, enjoyed a passion for horses, and often included an iconic white stallion in his rural scenes.
