Artist Biography:
Robert M. Orfant – (1968-present)

The youngest child of an accomplished painter and skilled craftsman, Robert M. Orfant was born and raised in Newburyport, MA in 1968. Robert began painting during his teenage years under the guidance of his mother, Stella Orfant, who is herself a proficient painter of landscapes and portraits. He intermittently acquired knowledge and experience in woodworking and carpentry through his father, Robert E. Orfant.
During and after Robert’s attendance at Newburyport High School, he was employed by his aunt and uncle, as they ran a successful framing business in Newburyport, MA. There, Robert thoroughly learned custom framing techniques which he now applies to his own artwork.
After earning his high school diploma, Robert M. Orfant relocated to Madison, NH in the White Mountains. As he continued to develop his painting techniques, Robert advanced in another facet of his life: his music. He composed and recorded several new age albums. He had the pleasure and privilege of using album cover art borrowed from an artist he finds most influential, Maxfield Parrish.
While painting primarily landscapes and composing original music, Robert worked as a chef in many hotels in the Mount Washington Valley, including the White Mountain Hotel. While employed there, Robert competed and often placed in both gingerbread house and ice-carving competitions.
Following his career in the hotel/restaurant industry, Robert pursued a business in the antique industry and successfully bought/sold hundreds of paintings, among other collectibles. He found much of his inspiration for painting through the art that he bought and sold, which motivated him to maintain and further improve upon his craft. He is primarily a self-taught painter who received art lessons under the guidance of another noted painter from the valley, Robert Gordon.
Robert continues to paint for his own pleasure, and in recent years has responded to and participated in several artistic ventures, including selling his art at the State of the Art Gallery in Jackson, NH. He displayed, sold and was awarded recognition for his oil landscapes at a summer annual art exhibition in Jackson.
Robert’s primary focus in painting is oil landscapes. He also is one of few painters who practices glazing, a technique in which he layers oil paints alternately with varnish, for the purpose of producing a striking, luminescent effect within the landscape.
