| Artist Statement: My collage paintings on paper or panel are abstract, yet contain recognizable images that offer visual clues of real and imagined memories, associations, emotions and current issues. Working intuitively rather than from sketches, studies or drawings, I paint with acrylic integrating images and a variety of found materials. Often, I polish away pigment to reveal the history of earlier layers. The elevated value of paper in ancient cultures, its function in passing on knowledge throughout time, as well as its mundane character in our current lives makes it an excellent vehicle for me to express my ideas. How paper takes pigment and is resilient yet has a memory is attractive to me. I use assorted papers combining vintage text, old stamps, maps, hand-addressed envelopes, diary pages and other interesting bits and scraps of paper I come across in the course of daily life. An element incorporated into many of my works is the vintage button. Embedded in these buttons is a hint of creativity in the banality of life, a history of personal touch, of functional decoration and glory. Even common, straightforward buttons conjure up a sense of security serving to hold close, secure, and protect against the elements. The photo images I integrate into my compositions function as a reference point, a suggestion or an illusion. I fold photos into the painting, blurring the edges, painting over them with translucent medium or pigment, sometimes all but obscuring them, leaving just enough to suggest a narrative.
