Artist Biography:
Kevin Red Star was born in 1943 on the Crow Indian Reservation in Lodge Grass, Montana.  He was raised in a family that values art and culture, where he developed an early love of drawing and music.  This exposure and encouragement sustained him during his years in grade school during the time when Crow students were denied association with thier language and cultural heritage.  Later, when he was one of 150 students chosen to attend the newly established Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he was encouraged to explore his history and culture through modern art techniques.

Upon graduation, Red Star and several other Native students received scholarships to the San Francisco Art Institute.  Here he was exposed to the avant garde and political and social concerns of post-modern art.  Since embarking on his professional artistic journey, the acknowledged master artist is considered a visual historian and ambassador for his Native Crow culture.  In 1997, Kevin Red Star received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Art from the Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.

Red Star explains, "Indian culture has in the past been ignored to a great extent.  It is for me, as well as for many other Indian artists, a rich source of creative expression.  An intertwining of my Indian culture with contemporary art expression has given me a greater insight concerning my art.  I hope to accomplish something for the American Indian and at the same time achieve personal satisfaction in a creative statement through my art."

Red Star's works are the focal point of several important museum collectioms, including the Smithsonian Institution ~ National Museum of the American Indian; CM Russell Museum; Heard Museum; Denver Art Museum; Eiteljorg Museum; Southwest Museum; Whitney Museum of Western Art; Institute of American Indian Arts Museum; United States Department of State; and scores of others.  Pursuing a successful career spanning three decades, over 100 large scale exhibitions have featured the celebrated artist's works on canvas and paper.  from "Indian Gaming" March 2008

Artist Statement:

Kevin Red Star does not deem himself to be a political advocate of the Native American populace.  He, very rightly so, sees himself as an interpretor, and portrayor of the History and Culture of his people.  In the words of Robert Rauschenberg ~ "There should be no barriers in Art".  This is the philosophy that drives the person, and the art, of Kevin Red Star.

Review of Artist's Work:
My name is Mary and I am Kevin Red Star's Personal Assistant / Representative.  Being in the process of cataloguing Kevin's works from 1963 to the present, I have been given incredible insight on the processes, and growth, of his art.  Recently, there is an illumination in his images that goes beyond the "Mystic Light" of the past.  As though each and every piece has a life of its own.  His collectors are faithful, and consistant.  Mr Red Star is humble and gracious.  You don't wake up one morning and say "I think I will work for a 'Master' in the art world".  Very seldom are artists able to wittness the fruits of their labour, such as Kevin Red Star has been able to do.  His art is magic, and compelling.  This tenure will be the greatest pleasure of my life.
