Artist Biography: Colors exploding, paint splashing, music playing and a canvas takes life in her studio. Life experiences have taught this internationally collected artist to remove herself from the box and view the world from a new perspective every time she enters her studio to paint. Her journey in life has encompassed many careers, from runway model to graphic artist, from musician to singer, from teacher to artist.
In 1952, Laurie Justus was born in St. Louis Missouri. She was the middle child between two brothers. The family moved to Texas when she was four years old, so she considers herself a Texan first. Inspired by her oldest cousin, Annette Hampe Callies, Laurie began to draw and paint. Her sidewalk chalk creations became full oil paintings as she grew more confident in her work.
Her mother and father encouraged her progress by providing the necessary tools and supplies to nurture artistic accomplishment. In addition to her self taught art, she began piano lessons in the second grade and a few years later taught herself to play guitar.
In junior high school, she met her future husband, Terry Pace. He proved to be the greatest encouragement to her painting career. In high school she pursued art and then studied Fashion Illustration in College. From an early age she began donating work to the local PBS to help raise funds for its operation. Laurie maintained her focus in the field of art, but teenage years led to runway, television and print modeling in addition to her art, music and dance.
After graduating from Lake Highlands High School, Laurie studied at the University of Texas at Arlington and finished her undergraduate degree in Commercial Art at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. She married a man she met in college and settled into life, spending nineteen years in the piney woods of East Texas. She landed a position with the von Allmen Advertising Agency as head artist and at the same time renewed her love for art and music by teaching children in the community and forming In Perspective Studio in 1982. Returning to Stephen F. Austin, she began working on her Masters Degree in history and obtained her teaching certificate for the state of Texas. She accomplished this while juggling three children in a busy household including sports, Boy Scouts, Brownies and working as a commercial artist. It was her first husband’s career that caused the family to move first to Houston, Texas and shortly after to Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. Laurie attempted to return to individual art and music but received very little encouragement or support.
Change was in the air, and Laurie headed back to Texas with her three children. At the 20th high school reunion she met up again with junior high sweetheart, Terry Pace. The attraction was immediate and the two were married some months later and began life as newly weds with three children.
Laurie was teaching school to help with the household budget. The creative urges simmered in the background and Terry knew the family had to make changes. He urged Laurie to pursue painting again and the family adjusted to a single income. Slowly her confidence returned and she began painting commission pieces for neighbors and friends. A high school art chum, Ani Caver, encouraged her along the way. Her most enjoyable pieces were paintings she did for Julie Roberts out in California. Julie had horses and Laurie loved to paint them. She began to study the movement and energy of the horse and began to play intensely with her paints.
At the same time she began to teach again out of her home studio. Her emphasis with her students is to give back with their art. Art is a gift and it should be shared. Laurie supports numerous organizations, from the Double HP Horse Rescue in South Dakota; to Scottie Kingdom in Dallas; North Texas FEAT (Autism) in memory of her grandson Grant Thomas Hendren; The Boy and Girls Club of Glenrock, Wyoming; Research for Alzheimer’s and the Hospice House of Yates County, New York.
Terry and Laurie moved to Dallas in 2007. Laurie has a beautiful studio in the house with room for her printers, two easels and lots of tables and paint. The home was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and both Terry and Laurie love living back in Lake Highlands where they first fell in love.
Laurie is a juried member of the Daily Painters, the American Watercolor Society, The Colored Pencil Society of American, PPFA and is a listed artist in the “American Artist Bluebook”. Her artwork is collected internationally and can be found at Earth Works Art Gallery, New York; The Gillian Jones Gallery, Ohio; The Rare Gallery, Jackson Hole, Wyoming; the SR Gallery, Hong Kong; The Red Tree Gallery in California, Our House Gallery in El Dorado Hills, CA; Patina of Marble Falls, Texas; and The Dutch Art Gallery of Dallas, Texas.

| Artist Statement: With a splash of color and a splintering of light, the motion of brush and cutting of knife ~ the breath of that second captured on canvas. The energy passes from the artist to the surface and the journey begins.
Color captures both life and action in my paintings. I approach the canvas with open energy, an intense active palette knife and wide brush strokes. There is no fear of creativity and discovery as each painting evolves before me on the canvas. I am a full time professional artist working out of my studio six days a week. I have a degree in commercial art with 9 years experience as head artist for an ad agency, and 25 years of teaching art, piano and guitar. Sheer grit of survival following several personal tragedies within my family have brought me full circle in the knowledge of life, giving to others and living each day to its fullest potential. Stretching the limit in exploring color and space is my daily challenge.
Art was woven into my first memories as an older cousin flourished in creativity before my eyes, captivating me in the world of pencil and paint. The passion ignited into a life long existence and I opened In Perspective Studio in 1982. Graphics One Design came into my love of pushing paints is a full time job and it is my life.
| Review of Artist's Work: The work of Laurie Pace is firmly rooted in both the classical ideal and 20th century Modernism, along with nuances of 19th century Barbizon school romanticism. Similar to many Postmodern artists, Laurie’s work varies in form and makes witty allusions to artistic sensibilities from the past. Her paintings speak volumes regarding the sensual and evocative nature of visceral oil paint. The manner in which Laurie handles this classic medium reaches far beyond the mere objectiveness of the subject at hand, and touches upon such elements as timelessness, compassion and perhaps even grace. A painting of a horse is not merely a horse, but an iconic expression of the omniscience of all nature. The viewer is lured in through the use of symbolic colors and sassy paint handling, and can’t help but experience similar sensations as the horse, whether it be vulnerability or longing.
