Biography Achsah Brewster
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Achsah Barlow became a painter of
figure and religious symbolic subjects. She graduated from Smith
College in 1902, and then moved to New York City where she studied at
the New York School of Art and with Robert Henri at the Art Students
League. In 1905, she went to Paris and studied figure painting
from live models with Lucien Simon.
Through the writer, Vachel Lindsay, she met the artist Earl Brewster,
and they married in 1910. They had a
daughter named Harwood, whom Achsah frequently used as a model in her
paintings. From the time of their marriage until 1936, the Brewsters
traveled frequently, living much of the time in Italy and France and
