Agnolo Allori, better known as Bronzino, was the uncle of Allessandro Allori. He was born in Monticelli in 1503. He first studied under Raffaellino del Garbo and was just twenty when he joined forces with a fellow Mannerist painter Jacopo da Pontormo.
Bronzino was the leading court painter of the Florentine School in the middle of the sixteenth century. By the time he was appointed court painter to Cosimo I in 1539, Bronzino's style had already taken on the intellectual abstractness for which he is so famous, especially as a portrait painter.
