Biography Agustin Ibarrola
Born in the province of Biscay in 1930, he was trained by the painter Daniel Vázquez Díaz in Madrid, where he discovered his interest in cubist art. Later he spent some time in Paris and focused on the movement of constructivism as a member of the group ‘Equipo 57’.
Ibarrola was repeatedly imprisoned due to his political activities in the context of the then forbidden PCE (Communist Party of Spain). Since the 1980s, the artist has lived and worked at his own farm near Guernica. One of his best known works is probably the installation ‘Totems’, built of 100 railway sleepers at the Prosper-Haniel in the city of Bottrop in Germany.
