Aharon Alcalay, Israeli, born in Bulgaria, 1924.
Aharon Alcalay was born in Kuystendil, Bulgaria. He studied art in
Sofia, specializing in painting, mosaics and fresco. In 1948, he
immigrated to Israel. In 1959, he moved to Tel Aviv-Yafo, where he
worked as a teacher and director of the Bat Yam Institute of of Art. In
the 1960s, Alcalay helped to establish the artist's quarter in Safed,
where he lived part of the year.
Alcalay's work is mainly figurative, influenced by post-impressionist
art. He paints landscape, still-life and human subjects. Aquarelle and
etchings are his primary media. From 1944-1948 he studied at the National Academy of Art, Sofia, Bulgaria.
