Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Alexander Doyle became a sculptor of monuments with historical figures including Civil War heroes and other prominent persons. He studied in Italy at the National Academies at Carrara, Rome, and Florence and was a member of the Royal Raphael Academy.
His work can be found throughout the United States including Washington DC, Missouri, Alabama, New York, Ohio, and Georgia and Mississippi.
In New Orleans where he was active from 1882 to 1883, there are at least three statues credited to him:
* The city's statue of General Robert E. Lee on St. Charles Avenue is credited to a "Mr. A. Doyle", the "maker and designer." The statue, atop a 96-foot granite shaft, was unveiled on February 22, 1884.Displaying 750 of 1260 characters.
