Alexandrine McEwen (1876-1955)
Born in Nottingham, Kent, England in October, 1876, Alexandrine, at the age of thirteen, along with her sister Katherine (Kitty), was taken to Germany to complete her education. Together they immigrated to the United States in 1895 and settled in Detroit. Their initial art education was received at the Detroit Art Academy, after which the sisters attended the William Merritt Chase School in New York City, going abroad during the summers with the Chase Art Class.
Upon their return to Detroit they helped establish the Society of Arts and Crafts. Alexandrine was an original charter member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1903 as was her sister. Displaying 750 of 1512 characters.
