Known primarily from his exhibition records, Alfred Fredericks is thought to have been born in England, and is confirmed as having kept a studio in New York City and in Brooklyn the last years of his life.
He began his career as a painter of theater scenery, and then as a fine-art painter focused with oil and especially watercolor on narrative subjects such as scenes from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets. Other subjects came from fairy tails and sensational fiction such as The Angel of the Sepulcher or The Flesh Pots of Egypt. He was also a prolific magazine illustrator.
