A watercolor painter and community organizer, Alice Marshall had a fascination for the 'wild west' and a love of horses. In 1919, when she was age 23, she left her home in East Orange, New Jersey and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Looking back, she referred to herself as a pioneer as "she was never one to shy away from new experiences, and handled her arrival with fearlessness."(Arizona Cactus)
She became active in the Episcopalian Church, and in 1925, along with Fay Probst, became one of the first Girl Scout Leaders, starting a troop at her church, Trinity Cathedral. In 1936, Alice Marshall founded the Maricopa County Girls Scout Council and became its first President.
