Born in Monterey, CA on Feb. 5, 1897. Alta was from one of California's earliest families. Her great grandfather was Jose Joaquin de la Torre, the first of the alcaldes who governed Monterey in the early 1800s. Her parents operated a chandlery shop and hotel on Alvarado Street in Monterey where she grew up. She began art studies at age 14 under Armin Hansen, and continued at the CSFA under Van Sloun and Randolph. Her painting forte was floral studies. She later married a man named Crow; however, the marriage ended in divorce. A lifelong resident of Monterey, she died on Jan. 3, 1969. Member: Carmel AA.
