Biography Alvan Clark, Jr.
Engraver, miniature and portrait painter, Alvan Clark Jr. was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts (1804). Around 1821, he began painting portraits and miniatures. Little is known about Clark's art education, although it is known that Clark was self taught in engraving (c. 1824-25).
While he was painting, he continued working for textile manufacturers in Lowell, Massachusetts (1826-27); Providence, Rhode Island (1827-29); New York (1829-32); and Fall River, Massachusetts (1832-35).
