From a family of famous American artists and a pioneer on the Nebraska frontier, Alverda Peale Coker had high energy throughout the various phases of her life including motherhood, attempting to earn money, and fine art painting. She was born in 1870 when Nebraska had been a state for only three years and has been described as "the first white child born in North Platte." (Beloit Daily News) She was one of seven children of Mary Ann Comly Peale and Franklin Peale, Sr.
Her parents came to Nebraska just before the birth of Alverda so that her father, a Civil War Veteran, could take his new job “as the first foreman painter at the Union Pacific
