Born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 25, 1902 of parents John and Amy (Warner) Bartholomy Amy Hillyer died at her son's home in New London, Connecticut on January 19, 1970.
As a teenager, Amy Hillyer became interested in art while training and working as a color tinter (oil colorist) on black & white and sepia photographs for Johnson Photographer company of Hartford. She worked in oil coloring/tinting photography for Johnson until her marriage. She studied art from 1918 for many years as a student under James Goodwin McManus in Hartford and Old Lyme, and she also studied with Guy C. Wiggins and McManus in summer classes during the
