Andrea Locatelli, contemporary of Giovanni Pannini and Federico Zuccarelli, is considered the most important Roman landscape painter of the first half of the 18th century. His decorative fantasy landscapes with dense foliage, rich green color and bright blue skies were particularly popular among the Roman nobility and the high clergy. Numerous murals, now lost, were once found in the Palazzo Ruspoli and Palazzo Colonna, whose gallery used to contain 81 works.
