Of early women artists linked to Nebraska, Angel De Cora is unique in that she was raised on an Indian reservation, had no exposure to the ‘world’ beyond until she was a teenager, and yet became nationally known as a creative artist, teacher and lecturer. Her message to Indians---especially to Indian artists---was to be proud of your heritage, reflect symbolism of your own culture, and do not succumb to pressure by those persons in ‘white society’ whose goal is to replace whom you are with whom they are.
