Anna E. Sanford was born in Massachusetts in 1842. One of California's first women artists, Sanford studied with Mary Parke Benton while a resident of San Francisco. In 1857 she received an award at the Mechanics' Institute Fair for flower paintings. She was still in San Francisco in 1880.
