Anna Rhodes Hazzard was born on June 4, 1863, in Ottowa, Minnesota, the daughter of Thomas Rhodes and Mary Jane (Ellgood) Hazzard. By 1880, the family made their home in Rolla, Missouri, where she married Edward J. Miller on October 9, 1889.
A student of some of the most highly respected impressionist painters of the day, she studied in California and Connecticut as a pupil of Maurice Braun, Randall Davey, and Ernest Lawson. “She was a great admirer of Maurice Braun . . . and his influence appears in her work, where one finds the same pastoral charm as in Braun’s landscapes,” according to O. B. Jacobson and Jeanne d’Ucel’s Art in Oklahoma.
