Biography Anna Wells
“A ‘select school for young ladies’ was started in Santa Cruz in 1856 by Miss Anna Wells, who announced that instruction would be given in English branches, drawing, Spanish and music. Tuition was to be $4 a month for the English branches and $3 for the junior class. Anna Wells was an Englishwoman, a sister of the mother of Joseph Boston, the tanner. She died in 1894 in the old Boston home on Church street. Anna Wells was particularly fitted to teach drawing as she was an excellent artist and many pictures by her are still owned in Santa Cruz. One, a water color of the old mission in its final days of ruin, is one of the few authentic pictures of that structure still extant.” per Santa Cruz Evening News, Oct. 4. 1934, p. 20.
