Anna Sue Hughes Brown was born November 27, 1914, in Jonesboro, Arkansas (Anna Sue Hughes) to Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Hughes. Lavelle was a prominent builder in Blytheville, Ark. and the southern states. His contracts necessitated frequent relocations to California, so Anna Sue was schooled in several cities. She graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1932 and from Arkansas State University in 1936 with Honors.

Her activities there included President of the Delta Beta Chi sorority and the Art Club, member of Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Theta Kappa sororities, Editorial staff of the campus newspaper and officers in the French, Engineering and Theatrical Club.
