Dowden attended the Carnegie Institute of Technologie (now Carnegie Mellon University), graduating with a degree in art in 1930. Her desire to illustrate books brought her to New York City, where she was offered a teaching job at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, taking classes at the Art Students League and a mural atelier at the Beaux Arts Institute. Dowden became the Chairman of the art department at Manhattanville College in 1932, and served in this capacity for over 20 years.
She married fellow artist/teacher Ray Dowden in 1934, who after several years of marriage became Head of the art department at Cooper Union, where he served for over thirty years.
