An Inuit artist born in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, Annie Pootoogook does
colored pencil drawings that reflect her personal experiences and break
tradition with artwork subjects
usually associated with that culture---igloos, wildlife genre, people
wearing parkas, etc. Instead she focuses on modern Inuit society
and the less-than-romanticized or realistic complications of living in
that society. She resists the cliches, and confronts issues of
modern culture such as media influence and technology challenges.
Beginning her drawing activity in 1997 at age thirty one, she took
lessons at the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, an entity that
