A painter, printmaker, craftsperson and art educator, Anthony Velonis
was a pioneer in making serigraphs, a process he invented when working
for the Federal Art Project during the Depression. Serigraphs are
screenprints in paint, rather than ink, and are created in totality by
the artist beginning with the design, then the making of the stencils
followed by the application of the paint and the pulling of the
sheets. The innovation was the joining of the artist
with the printmaking, which heretofore had involved a commercial
printer simply using an artist's design. With this new approach
