Biography Antonio Bortone
Ippazio Antonio Bortone (1847-1938)
He is one of 19th century Italy's
foremost sculptors. His career began at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Naples where he later became honorary Professor. He frequently submitted
ideas for monuments in various Italian provinces, some of the most
notable of his eventual commissions being a bust of King Vittorio
Emanuele III of Italy at the National Parliament, and a bust of Gino
Capponi, the famous Florentine historian, in Santa Croce, Florence. As
the result of the success of his commissions, he was permitted into
various Orders of Knighthood, including The Order of Santi Maurizio e
Lazzaro by King Umberto I following the installation of his monument to
Quintino Sella in Biella.
