Antonio M. Vedovelli immigrated to the United States from Verona, Italy, in 1893, at the age of twenty-five. Little is known about his early life in America other than he lived and worked in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Vedovelli retired to St. Augustine, Florida, in 1924, working as a part-time caddie at the St. Augustine Golf Club. In 1934 he began to paint St. Augustine’s historic architecture including ships anchored in the downtown harbor. Untrained and lacking any academic background, Vedovelli developed a highly personal folk style often described as primitive or naïve.
