Biography Antonion Shindler
Antonio Zeno Shindler fled his native home (there is some question as to
whether he was Bulgarian or Romanian), finding his way to Paris to
study art. It is not known when he arrived in America but by the
mid-19th century he was active in Philadelphia as a drawing instructor
at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
A tour of the American
West in 1870-1871 in the company of the Englishman William Blackmore
inspired him to become a dedicated painter of Native American subjects.
In the ensuing years until the late 19th century, Shindler worked at the
Smithsonian Institution, specializing in ethnographic subjects. He was
