Born on June 10, 1849 in Springfield, OH. Griffith secured the first public funds for support of the Detroit Museum of Art and served as its director from 1890 until 1913. While there, he was also a lecturer and art critic. He retired to southern California in 1914 and soon settled in Santa Barbara into a home at 426 W. Victoria. He died there on Sept. 23, 1930. His oil of the Santa Barbara Mission can be seen on page 120 of Arthur H. Gibson's Artists of Early Michigan.
