Arthur Gibbes Burton was born in Troy, New York in 1883. He graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He was a student of John Carlson at the Arts Students League in New York and at the League's Summer School in Woodstock, NY where he met his wife Mary and established a studio-residence. In the mid-1920's Arthur and Mary moved to Newfane, Vermont and then Brookline, Vermont.
The major focus of his impressionist landscapes is the West River and its neighboring villages. Newfane, Brookline, Townsend, Jamaica and the Derry's. Arthur Gibbes Burton died in 1969.
