A son of Octar H. Copson, a fruit painter for Royal Worcester porcelain, Arthur Paul was born in 1881, in Worcester, England. He immigrated in 1895 to the USA, lived in Grand Rapids, MI, then Wyoming, MI; then traveled to France, England, Montreal and Quebec. He painted in all of these locations and studied at the Julian Academy in Paris.
By 1900, he was decorating furniture at Oriel Cabinet Company, a Grand Rapids fine cabinets manufacturer. His father was the art director at the same company at the same time, while his brother and sister were also decorators, which may be considered prove that Octar likely trained them all from early on.
Paul later trained locally as an art student in Grand Rapids
